As of 2000 the population was 25,224 and by 2009 was estimated at 31,536. It was named for the Ute Indians, the tribe that lives in the basin. Its county seat and largest city is Vernal.[1] Located just outside Vernal, the Vernal-Uintah County Airport provides daily scheduled air service to Denver, Colorado.
Vernal is one of the largest cities in the United States without a railway. One was proposed in the past, with a railway station being built. There is still a railway approximately 60 miles away from city limits. Railways are used for coal being delivered to the power plant and the transportation of gilsonite, a former major part of the economy in the area.
Naples is a city in Uintah County, in the Vernal metro area. The community was named for the city in Italy. The latitude of Naples is 40.426N. The longitude is -109.498W. It is in the Mountain Standard time zone. Elevation is 5,230 feet.The estimated population, in 2003, was 1,411.
